Lanzarote is the fourth largest of 8 islands that make up the Canary Island archipelago, and whilst most of the tourist resorts are located in the South / South East, it's handy to know about the different forms of transport available to get around the island.
Using Local Transport in Lanzarote
With a little bit of know-how it's really easy to get around in Lanzarote. From public transport to organised Lanzarote Excursions, there are a great selection of ways to get around and get out and see the magnificent sights that the island has to offer.
Lanzarote Bus Services
The local bus service in Lanzarote is cheap, clean and generally runs on time. Once you've made sense of the bus routes and where you want to get on and off it's easy enough to jump on and get to where you need to go. The Lanzarote bus service connects most places on the island, although the services to the more remote parts are less frequent than those connecting the busier towns and resorts.
There are bus stations located in each of the major towns - you may see these signposted as Estaciones de Guaguas. For some resorts, this is where you would catch the bus to get to another village or town, but in larger resorts, such as Puerto del Carmen, you can catch the bus at different stops to actually get around the resort. Playa Blanca has it's own internal bus service that runs on a loop all day, and it's just a few euros no matter where you need to get to within the town.
If you're technically minded, you can download an App to your phone to give you information on the Lanzarote Bus Services.
The Moovit App is able to tell you want bus lines you need to take to get to your destination. It's available on both iOS and Android.
Lanzarote Taxis
You won't be able to go too far in Lanzarote without seeing a taxi. Each municipality has its own Taxi service that can be differentiated by the colour of the vehicle. The Taxis are only allowed to accept fares from their own municipality but can take you to wherever you want to go. Taxi Drivers are usually friendly, polite and well informed about where places are on the island, but not many speak English so be at least prepared with a minimum amount of Spanish to make it easier to get to your destination (more often than not you can get away with just saying the name of the place!).
If you need to call for a taxi, then you can usually ask your hotel reception, or the cashier in your restaurant, who will arrange for one to come to collect you. For reference, a list of taxi numbers can be found below. It might be useful to save the relevant number to your phone (remember if you are using a non Spanish phone to dial +34 first!)
Playa Blanca : 928 51 71 36
Puerto del Carmen / Tias : 928 52 42 20
Costa Teguise : 928 80 62 33 or 902 36 3400
Arrecife : 928 80 31 04, 928 81 27 10 or 928 80 08 06
Puerto Calero (Yaiza) : 928 52 42 22
Getting from Lanzarote Airport to your Accommodation
There are many different transport options you can consider when it comes to getting from Lanzarote Airport to your accommodation.
Lanzarote Airport Taxis
Firstly, there are always plenty of Taxis available at the arrivals doors. Simply head to the first taxi in the line and let the driver know where you want to go. The cost of a Lanzarote Taxi to your accommodation will vary, depending on the time of day and which resort you are staying in. Taxis from Lanzarote Airport to Puerto del Carmen will be a lot cheaper than a taxi to Playa Blanca, for example.
Taking into account that a Lanzarote Airport Taxi price may slightly vary depending on where your accommodation is located within a resort, approx prices at the time of writing are:
- Lanzarote Airport Taxi to Playa Blanca: €45-€50
- Lanzarote Airport Taxi to Arrecife: €10-€14.
- Lanzarote Airport Taxi to Puerto del Carmen: €12-€18.
- Lanzarote Airport Taxi to Costa Teguise:€20-€24.
Lanzarote Private Hire / Hopper Airport Transfers
Another option for getting from Lanzarote Airport to your accommodation is via a private (or shared) pre-booked service. These are sometimes referred to as 'hopper' services and are effectively a minibus that makes either one, or several stops, en-route. The best way to arrange this type of transport is to book it with your holiday package, but you must do it before you travel.
Private Hire Cars are also another option, which again must be pre-booked. Watch out for unlicensed private hire cars from Lanzarote Airport though as they may not have the correct paperwork, or insurance, to carry passengers. Always book with a reputable company, not an individual claiming to do 'Airport runs'
Local Bus Services from Lanzarote Airport
One of the cheapest ways to get from Lanzarote Airport to your accommodation is by using the local bus service. The busses pass through the airport regularly, are cost effective and generally run on time. The only downside of this type of transfer is it's likely you will need to get a taxi or change busses, at the other end if you're staying in a resort like Playa Blanca.
Water Transport in Lanzarote
A unique way of getting from certain places to another is by boat! There is a water taxi that runs between Puerto del Carmen and Puerto Calero (very handy on Market days) and neighbouring islands of La Graciosa and Fuerteventura are only short ferry journeys away, giving you the option to explore up to 3 Canary Islands during your stay in Lanzarote!
Lanzarote Tours and Excursions
If public transport isn't for you, but you still want to get out and see some of the best spots that Lanzarote has to offer, then an organised excursion or day trip could be for just up your street. With collection and drop off at, or very close to, your accommodation it's an easy and efficient way of getting around if you don't have a car or don't want to use the public services.
