The Popular Canary Island is nominated as contender for the prestigious title of Best Beach Destination in the National Geographic Travel Awards this January.
Fuerteventura is no stranger to stunning beaches. The Dunas de Corralejo and beaches of Jandia are two that stand out. So it's probably rightly so that the island has been nominated for the title of Best Beach Destination in Januarys National Geographic Travel Awards.
Fuerteventura offers holiday-makers a diverse selection of different beaches, from golden and white sands, volcanic stone and the quirky ´popcorn' beach made up dead rhodoliths, a type of red corraline algae, that have the appearance of popcorn.
Although, and we might be slightly biased, we think that Fuerteventura is a great choice to win the award, however as you would expect it's up against some very strong contenders especially against fellow Spanish Nominees.
Menorca
Menorca is a Biosphere Reserve recognised for its coastal conservation efforts and biodiversity. The island is home to some stunning beaches, worthy of nomination for the title.
A Mariña Luscense
Home to the As Catedrais beach which stretches are huge 114km along the Galican coastline it offers visitors breathtaking views.
Costa Verde
Not only home to stunning landscapes inland, the Asturias coast is shaped amongst cliff faces and meadows that grow down to the waters edge. It's a surfers paradise and some of the most unique beach scenery in the world.
Costa Brava
If we're talking top beaches, then the Mediterranean sands of the Costa Brava need to get a mention. The stunning landscapes and beaches of this region, stretching from Blanes to Portbou via Girona, make the Costa Brava a contender to keep an eye on.
Fuerteventura, whilst up against some tough competition, is a beach lovers paradise that offers year round warm weather and crystal clear waters that are perfect for both relaxed bathing and water sports.
