Gran Canarias efforts in promoting and supporting responsible tourism have been rewarded by the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI).
The island initiated its campaign to improve sustainability with the Biosphere System back in 2021, in an effort to become a leading sustainable tourist destination in Europe. Biosphere is an international methodology for the management, recognition, and certification of sustainability developed by the RTI.
In acknowledgment of the islands work it has been awarded the 'Biosphere Certified' designation, recognising the commitment to sustainability. This recognition aligns with 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets of the United Nations' Agenda 2030.
Gran Canaria also ranks among the top 15 European destinations with the highest number of certified sustainable accommodations.
Why is sustainable tourism important?
The aim of sustainable tourism is to reduce the negative impacts and destruction caused by tourism in destinations. This can be done by harbouring and using green energy and fuel sources, protecting wildlife and natural environments with the ultimate aim to make the areas not only a better place for tourists to visit, but for locals to live in.
Councillor Álamo mentioned that 38 companies have received the sustainability certification to date, with many more in the process of working towards achieving it.
Gran Canaria joined the 'Biosphere Destination' program in December 2021, with a plan to align the popular tourist destination with the three hallmarks of sustainability: Environmental, Socio-economic and territorial.
By the 20th December 2023 the island successfully passed an audit by the RTI.
