Couple spotted climbing a volcano at The Timanfaya National Park
A couple, presumed to be tourists, have been caught on camera climbing a volcano in the protected area of The Timanfaya National Park.
Two people have been filmed ascending one of the volcanic cones in The Timanfaya National Park, Lanzarote. The Timanfaya Park is a protected UNESCO designated Biosphere reserve covering an area of 51.07 kilometres. Although there are numerous excursions to the park, it is only possible to explore the area via a guided coach tour (or camels if that is your preference). It is illegal to walk, or hike, inside of the Timanfaya National Park.
The video, shared by Lancelot Digital, shows the couple making their way up the volcano, followed by picking up lava from the floor. Numerous signs around the road through Timanfaya warn visitors that it is not possible to walk on the lava fields, or climb the volcanos. This is for the safety of anyone passing through and for preservation of the historic park.
The unlawful event highlights a recent trend of visitors to the island who think it's acceptable to flaunt the law and disrespect the island. Only recently a couple was caught swimming in the subterranean lake at Jameos del Agua.
