The Ministry of Health for the Canary Islands has issued alerts as part of a plan for preventative actions for excessive temperatures throughout the Archipelago.
On Monday 2nd October Health Risks were reviewed and extended for municipalities in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura where temperates are expected to hit 33 degrees for the province of Las Palmas and 34 degrees for Santa Cruz.
The following alerts were issued.
Lanzarote
Yellow Alert for San Bartolomé up to October 4th.
Tenerife
Red Alert for Adeje in the south of the island from October 4th to October 8th.
Yellow Alert for Candelaria from October 4th to October 7th and San Miguel de Abona, La Orotava and El Puerto La Cruz from October 4th to October 6th.
Gran Canaria
Red Alert for Agüimes from October 2nd to October 5th, Mogán from October 2nd to October 8th, San Bartolomè de Tirana until October 6th and La Aldea San Nicolás and Santa Lucia de Tirana until October 8th.
Yellow Alert for Valsequillo and Ingenio up to October 4th
Fuerteventura
Red Alert in Pájara and Tuineje up to October 7th
Yellow Alert for Antigua until October 2nd
Advice and Precautions for High Temperates in the Canary Islands
Avoid Alcohol, Caffeine and drinks with a high sugar content as they can contribute to dehydration.
Where possible, stay in doors or in the shade in an air conditioned environment.
Reduce physical activity. Avoid exercise outdoors.
Keep hydrated and drink plenty of water.
Keep an eye of loved ones who may be more vulnerable than you. For example the elderly, infants or pregnant women may be more susceptible to the heat.
