Firefighters battle wildfire on popular Canary Island
Firefighters and emergency services continue to battle a wildfire on the popular holiday island of Tenerife.
The fire in the north of the island has burnt through 7,900 acres since late on Tuesday (15th August) and resulted in the evacuation of 8000 across eight municipalities.
With emergency services on the other islands on standby to assist if required, the situation hasn't been helped by recent high temperatures that left the ground dry and winds that have contributed towards the spread of the fire.
It is reported that as many as 300 firefighters and Spanish Army personnel are tackling the blaze which is currently 12 miles away from the main town of Santa Cruz in the North East of the island.
Tourist facilities around the Mount Teide National Park have been closed to the public.
Thankfully no injuries are reported at this time
The natural event follows wildfires on the nearby island of La Palma last month which led to the evacuation of 2000 people and destruction of 11,000 acres of land.
Tenerife is a popular holiday destination in the Canary Islands and we must stress that the main tourist resorts on the island are situated far away from the location of the fire and out of harms way.
