Fox Shark spotted by divers in the waters around Playa Chica, Puerto del Carmen
An inquisitive fox shark recently joined a group of suprised divers in the waters of Playa Chica, Puerto del Carmen.
YouTube footage of a Fox Shark in the waters of Playa Chica, Puerto del Carmen, shows the long tailed fish elegantly gliding alongside a diver in the unexpected encounter. It's not typical to see this type of fish off the coasts of Lanzarote so the divers were extremely fortunate to experience the presence of the shark.
The long tailed Fox Shark, also known as the Thresher Shark, can grow up to 6 meters in length and is easily distingue by its large upturned tail that can grow in length as long as the sharks body itself. They are usually found in temperate, tropical oceans around the world. The sharks are solitary creatures and not considered aggressive towards humans unless provoked. Their diet consists of the likes of tuna and mackerel, and can include the likes of squid and cuttlefish. The large tail of the Fox fish is used to stun it's prey.
Although an encounter such as this isn't common around the waters of Puerto del Carmen, there is success when it comes to Dolphin Spotting in Lanzarote, although sightings are never guaranteed.
