Ángel Vázquez has announced he will consider the inclusion of the Museo Atlántico in the islands official list of tourist attractions.
Ángel Vázquez, the Cabildo’s new tourist councillor, has announced that there may still be a future of the Museo Atlántico underwater sculpture museum in Playa Blanca, as he considers it's inclusion in the official list of Lanzarote Tourist attractions.
The attraction was in the headlines as recently as late 2022 as a number of statues were removed in what was thought at the time to be a political stunt. At the time, locals divers feared for the future of the underwater museum and desperately sought advice and reassurances that no more statues would be removed.
The Museo Atlántico was removed from the official list of Lanzarote Tourist attractions by the previous administration as it had no bearing or relation to César Manrique. It was also operating at a significant loss. Vázquez has said that he would study proposals and implement them as “as long as they are possible and profitable.”
The Museo Atlántico is Europes ONLY underwater museum and opened off the coast of Playa Blanca back in 2016. It was a dive spot of choice for both new and experienced Scuba Divers. Situated just off the coast and the beach at Las Colorados, the museum is made up of sculptures created by Jason deCaires Taylor, many of which were modelled on local residents of Lanzarote and The Canary Islands.
The addition of the Museo Atlántico being added to the list of official Lanzarote attractions would be a huge boost to awareness of the site, and hopefully encourage more divers to visit and explore the area.
