Lanzarote, an island in the Canary Islands with a unique character, is teeming with amazingly unusual attractions and experiences meant for non-typical tourists. If you're craving a different kind of experience, you've come to the right place as Lanzarote offers you once-in-a-lifetime adventures such as diving in an underwater museum.
Last year, the first underwater museum in Spain opened in Lanzarote. Also known as the first underwater museum in Europe, the now popular attraction is called Museo Atlantica, an extraordinary work of art by Jason deCaires Taylor, a British sculptor known for his spectacular underwater creations.
On your holiday, discover art like you never have before by visiting this must-see dive site through our underwater museum excursion!
First Underwater Museum Lanzarote: Museo Atlantico
Who would've thought that art can also exist underwater? No one but Jason deCaires Taylor, who is the brilliant man behind several underwater sculptures, including Museo Atlantico.
Located in the bay of Las Coloradas, the Lanzarote underwater museum features a complex work of art featuring 12 installations and over 300 life-size human figures found 12 to 14 metres deep underwater.
Here at TravelON World, we take you to an extraordinary adventure deep in the Lanzarote waters to witness firsthand Taylor's exceptional talent and spectacular creations.
What to See in the First Underwater Museum in Europe
The first underwater museum in Spain holds immense underwater treasures as told by the creative mind of Taylor. As you dive 12 to 14 metres, you'll see the Portal, which is part of the underwater botanical garden.
Here, you'll find a submerged mirror, which reflects back the ocean and features a life-size figure on the other end. Besides the installations, you can observe marine life here, as the art's “living stations” were created to attract fishes, sea urchins, and octopus.
If you venture farther, you'll see various sculptures designed to provoke environmental awareness, with a human-like figure lying on the sand. Farther along is the new installation, which is a stunning 30-metre long, 100-tonne wall, with several nearby figures, called Crossing the Rubicon.
According to Taylor, the installation symbolizes absurdity, a dysfunctional barrier in the middle of a vast fluid, three-dimensional space. Just like the other sculptures, it tells us an underlying message, this time about climate change and how we must take urgent action against it while we still can.
Other note-worthy sculptures you'll observe in the Lanzarote underwater museum are the Immortal Pyre featuring a funeral pyre with a human-like figure lying on top of firewood and a children's playground where men in suits can be seen on a see-saw. The see-saw apparently references an oil pump, which conveys a message against the arrogance of the corporate world.
Experience a diving adventure like no other while discovering brilliant works of art underwater by booking this excursion! Pre-booking is required for this activity, and the underwater museum Lanzarote and it is a full package including entrance to Museo Atlantico!
