What will you see on the Lanzarote Cesar Manrique Tour?
Cesar Manrique, the late, genius artist and architect transformed the island with stunning structures, buildings and attractions. Most of which you will see on the Lanzarote Cesar Manrique Tour.
Monumento Al Campesino
Centrally located on the island this monument was designed and built by Manrique in honour of hardworking farmers. Standing 15 meters tall, the initial Monumento a la Fecundidad is the entrance to the Monumento Al Campesino where you will find a spiral staircase descending to various rooms depicting different local arts and crafts. The buildings are all carefully created in the image of Cèsar Manrique including the white washed walls and green doors and window frames.
The village of Haria and Valley of the Thousand Palms
As you approach the Canarian village of Haria, you'll notice the palm trees that grow tall in the valley below. And this breathtaking view has a fascinating story behind it. The palm trees were planted due to a policy in the village which states that one palm must be planted for every girl born in the village, and two for every boy.
And don't forget to try out the new Haria viewpoint attraction. Step out onto the ledge to see the valley below.
Fun fact! Did you know that, at night, when you look down on to the village of Haria the lights of the buildings can be made out to look like a witch on a broom?
Buffet Lunch Stop (Optional)
The next stop is where you can enjoy an optional Buffet lunch. Please note that the lunch is optional and available for €8 per person, payable during the day of our Lanzarote Cesar Manrique tour. If you prefer, bring along some sandwiches and a drink to enjoy instead.
Mirador del Rio
This fascinating lookout is build 475m high into the cliff faces of the Riscos de Famara. Standing on the balcony and looking down to the island of La Graciosa, the towns, people and boats below all look like a minuscule toy set. The views are quite simply stunning. In typical Cèsar Manrique fashion, Mirador del Rio beautifully fuses art and nature together. Inside is a coffee shop where you can grab a sandwich and refreshment if you didn't get chance to enjoy the buffet at the previous stop.
Los Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes (The Green Caves)
Los Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes are two separate attractions that are actually part of the same volcanic lava tunnel, created by the eruption of the nearby Volcano de la Corona. You'll instantly spot the Manrique influence on Jameos del Agua, which the whitewashed garden and pool area. Jameos del Agua is home to hundreds, if not thousands, of blind albino crabs that are native to the island of Lanzarote and resident here in this subterranean salt water lake. Outside you'll find a large swimming pool, designed and built for the King of Spain, and not open to the public and an auditorium built into the lava tunnel to take advantage of the amazing acoustics.
Across the road, a guided tour around a small part of the 7km long lava tunnel known as Cueva de los Verdes provides you with a fascinating insight into the geology and history of the caves.
Jardin de Cactus (Cactus Gardens)
The next attraction on the Cèsar Manrique Lanzarote Tour is the Cactus Gardens. This tranquil garden, a disused quarry non the less, is home to 1,100 species of cacti. The towering cacti here make up an out-of-this-world sight, that you can relax and enjoy in the cafe on the terrace overlooking the garden.
Cesar Manrique House
The final stop of the tour takes you to the house of Cèsar Manrique in Tahiche. The property, built into a lava field and around 5 natural volcanic bubbles, is by far the most famous house in Lanzarote where the artist himself used to live for 20 years and is now the headquarters of Cèsar Manrique Foundation. Whilst here you'll get to explore the house, visual exhibitions and learn how Manrique tried to save the island and its residents from becoming slaves of tourism.
