Canary Islands – The regional government has announced a pre-alert for coastal areas in response to strong wave forecasts linked to Hurricane Kirk in the Atlantic. The alert will take effect today, Wednesday, at 6:00 PM, impacting the islands of Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, and El Hierro.
As reported earlier this week, the Canary Islands have been feeling the effects of the tail wind of Hurricane Kirk. The anticipated swells, forecast to reach 2-3 meters are attributed to Hurricane Kirk, which is expected to impact the islands in the coming days. In addition to the high waves, variable winds reaching up to 20 km/h are forecasted, likely exacerbating rough sea conditions.
The Western Islands have already seen their share of weather disturbances with rain and high winds.
Officials recommend postponing all nautical and sporting activities and strongly discourage swimming at remote or unsupervised beaches. In addition, individuals are advised to maintain a safe distance from the shoreline if unusual waves are observed, even if conditions appear calm. It goes without saying but beaches with red flags on display are strictly off-limits for swimming.
Public safety remains the top priority as the islands brace for potential dangers associated with the storm. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and will provide further updates as necessary.
