It's that time of year again when the biggest sporting event in Lanzarote takes to the streets and waters, as more than 1000 athletes from around the world visit the island to take part in The Ironman.
The 2024 Lanzarote Ironman event takes place this Saturday, May 18th, and promises to be another spectacle for both participants and spectators. Starting on Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen at 7am, the athletes will take to the water for a 3.8km swim in the ocean.
Following the swim athletes jump on their bikes to tackle a gruelling 180.2km course around the island taking in the stunning volcanic landscapes and picturesque Canarian villages through Uga, Macha Blanca, La Villa de Teguise, Teseguite, Los Valles, Masdache and La Asomada. As if the swim and bike ride doesn't sound enough already, athletes then don their trainers and set out on a 42.2km run through the intense May sunshine. The finale of the Ironman is a huge spectator event as crowds line the Avenida cheering on the athletes over the finish line.
Of course, an event of such magnitude does bring some disruption to the island and there are a number of road closures planned for the day.
The event is an important part of the Lanzarote's efforts to promote the island as a premier location for sports tourism.
