Access to Papagayo earns Yaiza Council €144,000 so far this year
The Ayuntamiento de Yaiza, the council responsible for charging for access to the Natural Monument of Los Ajaches, has earned €144,000 in entrance fees during the first seven months of 2024.
The Natural Monument of Los Ajaches is home to some of the most stunning beaches in Lanzarote, collectively known to many as Papagayo, although the name Papagayo also refers to one of the seven beaches in the area.
To gain access to the beaches by car, visitors must pass through a toll situated on the long dirt track to the car parks. The entrance fee through the toll is €3, although visitors who arrive very early in the morning or later in the evening might be able to enter for nothing. On certain days an entrance fee may also not be applied in the case of staff shortages.
A fee has been required to enter the park for the last 25 years, and local residents are able to enter at no cost.
It is not known what the funds raised will be spent on specifically, although the Ayuntamiento do invest money back into the access road on a fairly regular basis. The access road is not paved and before attempting to access the beaches by car we recommend that you check the terms and conditions of your car hire contract. It is possible to access the beaches via a fairly short cliff top walk if you can find parking in the Las Coloradas area of Playa Blanca.
