After weeks of enjoying high temperatures, the Canary Islands are set to experience a significant weather change this week. Rain is forecasted to sweep across the archipelago as the tail of Hurricane Kirk approaches mainland Spain.
Despite the absence of autumn’s slight drop in temperatures, some regions have seen the mercury soar to 34°C, prompting yellow alerts for heat, strong winds, and rough seas, particularly in Gran Canaria. However, cooler conditions are anticipated as the storm system moves closer.
The European weather model (ECMWF) indicates a significant drop in temperatures across the Canary Islands, particularly in the higher altitudes of the mountainous regions. Residents can expect a welcome light rain, though it is likely to be unevenly distributed.
AEMET Issues Warning for Strong Winds in Tenerife for Monday
The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a warning for "very strong" westerly winds in the high peaks of Tenerife during the early hours 7th October. Residents can expect high clouds to dominate the skies, with occasional low clouds forming along the coasts, particularly in the early morning and evening.
Temperatures are predicted to drop slightly, with moderate decreases anticipated in inland areas. Coastal winds are expected to be light and variable, predominantly coming from the northwest, while breezes will provide some relief along the shores.
In the mountainous regions of Tenerife, however, strong westerly winds could reach gusts exceeding 90 km/h, prompting residents to take precautions in these elevated areas.
Tuesday brings partly Cloudy Skies with possible Light Rain in the Canary Islands
The weather on Tuesday 8th is expected to be partly cloudy, featuring both low and high cloud cover across the region. There is a slight chance of light, sporadic rainfall on the northern slopes of the mountainous islands during the morning, while the southern interiors of the central islands may see similar conditions in the afternoon.
Wednesday sees cloudy intervals and consistent temperatures to the Canary Islands
Cloudy intervals are anticipated in the northern parts of the islands, with clearer skies expected around midday. The remainder of the archipelago is likely to experience mostly clear conditions throughout the day.
Maximum temperatures are expected to remain consistent, while minimum temperatures may see a slight decrease. Northeasterly winds will pick up, transitioning from light to moderate by the evening, adding a brisk touch to the day’s weather.
Thursday Forecast: Lighter Winds and Warmer Temperatures Ahead
Despite some uncertainty regarding the long-term weather outlook, Thursday is expected to bring lighter winds, partly cloudy skies, and a rise in temperatures across the Canary Islands.
Although rainfall is anticipated to be minimal, the brief break from the heat and the return of cooler conditions will offer a refreshing change for residents throughout the archipelago.
