June, July and August 2024 saw more rain and slightly higher temperatures than average across the Canary Islands, ranking it the 12th warmest summer since records began back in 1961 - and according to AEMET forecasts a warm and dry autumn is around the corner.
In a summer that saw an average temperature of 22.3 degrees Celsius, 0.4 higher than normal, the islands also recorded 7.5mm of rainfall across June, July and August - the 9th wettest summer on record. As you might expect, the mixture of high temperatures and precipitation meant the islands were classed as humid, or in some cases extremely humid.
The Summer months also experienced a number of Calimas, bringing sand and dust over from the Sahara desert.
Rain in June fell at 142% of the expected amount with 3.9mm, July saw 244% more rain than expected with 2.2mm and August 90% with 1.9mm.
The highest temperatures for Summer 2024 were recorded in the South of Gran Canaria and the eastern islands of Tenerife , La Playa and El Hierro also saw the mercury rise slightly higher than normals, especially in areas of higher altitude.
Tourists will be delighted that AEMET has forecast Autumn 2024 to be slightly warmer and drier than historic averages.
