The Canary Islands are poised to capture 60% of the revenue generated by British tourism in Spain this winter, according to Jéssica de León, the region's Minister of Tourism and Employment. Speaking at the World Travel Market (WTM) in London, de León highlighted the crucial role that UK visitors play in the islands' economy and called for a shift in perceptions about the economic impact of British tourists.
"British travellers are vital to the Canary Islands' economic health," de León remarked, stressing the need to "break the myth that British tourists do not economically benefit the Islands." Her comments underscore the significance of the British market, which remains a key pillar of the region’s tourism industry.
As winter approaches, the Canary Islands are set to see a significant boost from British tourism, with the latest data revealing that visitors from the UK are among the highest spenders in the archipelago. On average, British tourists spend €128.60 per day—surpassing both the national average by 7% and outspending German visitors by 12%. This places them at the forefront of the islands' tourism economy.
In 2023, British nationals represented 31% of all visitors to the Canary Islands, contributing a remarkable 35% of the region's total tourism revenue. With the winter months drawing near, these figures are expected to rise, as the Canary Islands remain a top winter getaway for more than half of British tourists travelling to Spain.
Tourism officials are gearing up for a busy season, rolling out initiatives designed to improve the visitor experience and maximise the economic impact of British arrivals. Efforts to cater to this key market include enhancing services, expanding promotional campaigns, and focusing on sustainability to ensure long-term benefits.
With British tourists continuing to flock to the islands in record numbers, the Canary Islands are reinforcing their status as one of Spain’s most sought-after destinations for the colder months, bolstering both regional economies and Spain’s overall tourism industry.
