AEMET have issued a yellow alert for Calima in Lanzarote, from midday to midnight on Monday 19th August.
As some of you may have seen this morning, Lanzarote is currently sitting under a blanket of strange orange dust, a phenomenon known as Calima.
The term Calima is used to describe a meteorological event that occurs when fine sand and dust particles from the Sahara are lifted into the atmosphere and transported by prevailing winds. With the Canary Islands being in such close proximity to the Sahara Desert, it's not uncommon for the sand to reach the archipelago.
Visibility is forecast to be reduced to 3km, and we have already witnessed problems with planes landing at the Cesar Manrique International Airport this morning.
The alert, issued by AEMET is currently at just a Yellow Warning, with the possibility of electrical storms and strong winds throughout the day.
Calimas are usually harmless, but if you suffer from a respiratory condition it is advised to stay indoors until the air quality improves.
