1. Where is Matagorda in Lanzarote?
Matagorda is a small town to the East of Puerto Del Carmen in Lanzarote. If walking or driving from Puerto del Carmen you might not realise that you enter Matagorda as the two places tend to merge into each other. If you're coming west from the airport Matagorda is the first resort you will come across and is the place where many people plane spot on the beach at the end of the runway. Whilst often referred to as Puerto del Carmen, it is in fact it's own place with plenty to offer holidaymakers and tourists.
2. Is Matagorda the right Lanzarote resort for you?
Matagorda is a quieter resort than Puerto del Carmen, so is suited more for those wanting to relax on their holidays. However, due to its proximity to Puerto del Carmen, it's not far to travel for anyone wanting to sample a more vibrant nightlife and resort. In fact it's just a mile or so away and very accessible by taxi or the regular bus service.
3. Things to do in Matagorda. Restaurants and Bars
There is no shortage of quality places to eat and drink in Matagorda, with the main two areas being the Matagorda Center and Los Jameos Shopping Center
4. The Matagorda Center, Lanzarote
The Matagorda Center can be found on the seafront promenade. It's two storeys tall so you won't miss it as you walk past, and is full of delightful bars, restaurants and shops. It's within walking distance of most of the accommodation in Matagorda so if you're spending a day or evening here you won't need to worry about getting a taxi home, although as with anywhere in Lanzarote, the taxi services are excellent if required.
You can find all sorts of cuisines in the Matagorda Center, so whatever you fancy for dinner this could be the place for you.
5. Los Jameos Shopping Center, Matagorda
The Los Jameos Shopping Center isn't what it sounds like at all. If your first impression is a gran shopping centre on multiple floors then think again. It's a crescent of bars, restaurants and shops that runs alongside Playa Los Pocillios. You'll find everything here, from traditional English Cuisine, to afternoon coffees. It's a great place to sit and watch the world go by, both in the day and at night. .
6. Why would people stay in Matagorda?
The first thought that comes to mind is the location. It's the closest resort to the airport with transfer time no more than 10 minutes. So you'll be off the plane and into your accommodation in no time at all. Matagorda also has a huge beach covered in golden sands, so if sun worshipping is your thing then this is a great place to be.
If you're into nightlife then Matagorda is a great place to base yourself whilst in Lanzarote. It's very close to Puerto del Carmen, which is arguably the hub of nightlife on the island, and you're not far from the Arrecife, the capital city.
For more mature visitors Matagorda is the perfect location as it's completely flat and everything is fairly compact, meaning it's easy to get around.
If exploring is your thing then all the major excursions will offer a pickup and drop off service at Matagorda hotels and accommodation, and for anyone hiring a car it's easy and quick to jump onto the main roads around the island.
7. Things to do in Matagorda Lanzarote
If you're looking for things to do in Matagorda itself then a popular activity is Plane Spotting. If you head East on the promenade towards Arrecife you'll find yourself at the end of the Lanzarote Airport runway. This is usually a busy area full of people watching and photographing planes as they arrive and depart from the island.
As we've touched on already, Matagorda has some gastronomical delights available to you through an array of great restaurants and bars, all within walking distance of most of the hotels and accommodation. The beaches are also close by and offer golden sands and beautifully warm, calm waters.
8. Hotels and Accommodation in Matagorda, Lanzarote
Matagorda has many options for accommodation including smaller Aparthotel complexes and large all inclusive hotels. The largest hotel in Matagorda is the Beatriz Playa and more recently the resort has seen the addition of a new 5 Star Hotel, Lava Beach. No matter if you're looking for a self-catering apartment or all inclusive grand hotel holiday then Matagorda has something for you.
9. Excursions in Matagorda Lanzarote
If you're thinking about getting out to see the sights of Lanzarote then Matagorda is a great base for you.
